USCG clarifies ‘missing’ type-approval applications

The US Coast Guard (USCG) has clarified why its announcement that named two companies that had applied for type approval omitted two other companies that had submitted earlier applications, as BWTT reported yesterday (5 April).

That announcement was made on the USCG’s Maritime Commons online blog on Tuesday (4 April). Its editor, Lt Amy Midgett, said that as far as the application by Wärtsilä for its Aquarius EC BWMS is concerned the USCG’s Marine Safety Center (MSC) “only announces receipt of initial applications for type-approval once the application has been confirmed to be complete.”

The other application that BWTT referred to yesterday “is an application for a change to an already type-approved BWM system,” she said, and the MSC “does not announce requests for changes to an approved system.” There will only be an announcement on Maritime Commons when an amended certificate is approved and issued, she added.
