UPDATED: USCG type-approval operational limitations summarised

All five USCG type-approved systems are subject to some limitations, which are set out on their type-approval certificates, and BWTT has prepared this summary, in alphabetical order.

Alfa Laval’s PureBallast 3

Operational limitations:

The PureBallast 3.0 Ex and 3.1 Ex models meet the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may be installed in hazardous locations on a US flag vessel. The electrical supply and control systems must remain outside of hazardous locations. Alfa Laval has advised BWTT that, on 18 May, its USCG type-approval was extended to include all its systems, having flow ranges between 85-3,000 m3/h. 

 

Ecochlor's Ecochlor BWTS

Operational limitations:

  • Salinity: Not applicable
  • Water Temperature: Not applicable
  • Hold time: 24 hr min (treated water must meet 0.2 mg/l ClO2 MADC)
  • Active substance dose: 4.25 mg/l

The Ecochlor BWTS ET model meets the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may be installed in hazardous locations on a US flag vessel. The electrical supply, control systems, chemical tanks and chlorine dioxide generator cabinet must remain outside hazardous locations. The BWMS may be installed in hazardous locations on a foreign-flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.

The BWMS models which incorporate the use of FilterSafe Turbo filters may not increase rated capacity above that of the corresponding standard models.

 

OceanSaver’s BWTS MkII

Operational limitations:

  • Salinity: Not applicable
  • Water Temperature: Not applicable
  • Hold time: Not applicable
  • Electrolyte feed temperature: >17°C
  • Electrolyte feed salinity: >20 PSU
  • Filter inlet pressure: >1.6 bar
  • Total residual oxidant: >1.7 mg/l

The BWMS does not meet the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may not be installed in hazardous locations on a US flag vessel. The BWMS may be installed in hazardous locations on a foreign-flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.

The BWMS models which incorporate the use of FilterSafe Turbo filters may not increase rated capacity above that of the corresponding standard models.

 

Optimarin’s OBS and OBS Ex

Operational limitations:

  • Salinity: Not applicable
  • Water Temperature: 0-55°C
  • Hold time: >3 days
  • Filter pressure: >1.5 bar
  • UV intensity: >600 W/m2

The BWMS does not meet the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may not be installed in hazardous locations on a US flag vessel. The OBS Ex model may be installed in hazardous locations on a foreign flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.

 

SunRui’s BalClor

Operational limitations:

  • Electrolyte feed temperature: >5°C
  • Electrolyte feed salinity: >15 PSU
  • Filter inlet pressure: >1.6 bar
  • Total residual oxidant: 7.5 mg/l

The BWMS does not meet the requirements of 46 CFR [Chapter 1] Subchapter F or 46 CFR [Chapter 1] Subchapter J and may not be installed on a US flag vessel. The BWMS does not meet the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may not be installed in hazardous locations on a US flag vessel. The BWMS may be installed in hazardous locations on a foreign flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.

The BWMS models which incorporate the use of FilterSafe Turbo filters may not increase rated capacity above that of the corresponding standard models.
