SunRui Marine Environment Engineering of China has become the first Asian ballast water management system (BWMS) manufacturer to be granted US Coast Guard (USCG) type-approval for its BalClor treatment system.
Its certificate was issued on 6 June, more than four months after it submitted its application on 26 January. However, although USCG’s review took much longer than expected, SunRui told BWTT, “it proceeded smoothly.” USCG had asked for clarifications relating to US regulations, for which SunRui and DNV GL, as its independent laboratory, provided additional information about BalClor’s performance and certification tests.
In a statement, the company described the type-approval as “a milestone, reflecting the advanced electrolysis technology and the core competence of BalClor BWMS.” It said that it is evidence that SunRui “will provide reliable products with a higher standard to clients all around the world.”
SunRui has increased production capacity to cope with an expected increase in orders following this type-approval.
SunRui completed its shipboard tests in April last year and its land-based tests in November 2015, working with DNV GL as its independent laboratory. It is a division of China Shipbuilding Industry Co and has already secured a large number of orders in Chinese, Japanese and South Korean yards.
Its type-approval certificate notes some restrictions on its use, in particular that it cannot be installed on US-flagged vessels. SunRui is working on a supplementary application to address this, it advised BWTT.
